Usually
when we hear of a young African American male becoming successful we immediately
think of sports or the music industry as his ticket out. However, there
is shining hope for Iowa that does not follow the music or sports stereotype.
Eddie Moore, Jr. has pursued and achieved success in the world of academia.
After graduating from PCHS, Port Charlotte, FL in '85, Eddie
received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Cornell
College in Mount Vernon Iowa. The truth is he was able to attend college
because of his athletic abilities. After graduating, he returned to Florida
to coach and teach high school for a short time. However, athletics brought
him back to the midwest when he returned to college and attained a Master's
degree in Educational Administration.
At this time, athletic endeavors faded as a means of support
and he became involved in community activities. Eddie taught parenting
classes to African American fathers in the local school system. He provided
speakers and a community forum on Sunday mornings (in organized religion)
to discuss the issue of racism in the judicial system, social situations
and dating, to name a few. He also provided diversity training for the
employees of various small, Midwestern communities.
In 1996, he started America & Moore in order to provide
diversity and cultulral competency training and workshops for schools,
community groups and businesses.
Of course, the next step on the academic ladder is pursuit
of the Ph.D. Eddie is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the University of
Iowa in Social Foundations (ABD). As he pursues his degree, he continues
to provide diversity training for businesses, schools and city governments.
While doing all of this, he is the Director of Intercultural Life at Central
College in Pella, Iowa.
Eddie is a dynamic and personable diversity consultant
and public speaker. He has facilitated diversity training sessions for
more than 2,800 municipal employees in Iowa, as well as training sessions
for many Iowa colleges and universities. Eddie has also been a workshop
presenter for various national and international conferences concerned
with Education, Cultural Competency and Ethnicity. Eddie's presentations
are interactive and humorous while challenging and motivating participants.
